Material Religion

Material Religion is an international peer-reviewed academic journal focused on exploring the complex relationship between religion and material culture. Through an interdisciplinary perspective, the journal delves into how religion is embodied and practiced in a variety of material forms, including but not limited to images, objects of prayer and worship, architecture and sacred Spaces, works of art, and mass-produced artefacts.

The core objective of the journal is to reveal the role and significance of material culture in religious belief and practice. It encourages scholars to explore from different perspectives and methodologies how material forms influence and shape religious beliefs, rituals, and communities. Such research is concerned not only with material objects themselves, but also with the use and meaning of these objects in specific social and cultural contexts. The journal pays special attention to in-depth analysis of religious practices, including rituals, communication, rituals, instruction, meditation, propaganda, pilgrimage, display, magic, worship, and interpretation.
